Clip description

Elvis Maginnis (Marcus Graham) is close to a result in his investigation into the murder of his girlfriend’s husband. But car dealers Mickie MacEvoy (Nick Waters) and his son Michael MacEvoy (Stephen Curry) possess documents that could throw a spanner in the works: proof that Elvis’s girlfriend Carmen took kickbacks eight years ago while working for a company called Albatross Finance. If the truth about the murder comes to light, so will the truth about Carmen. Elvis sends in Rueben (Travis McMahon) to get the documents, posing as an Albatross Finance employee.

Curator’s notes

This is an entertaining sequence, showing Reuben giving his all to the role of sidekick. In the Good Guys Bad Guys world the unusual, eccentric and particular are emphasised and valued. The sequence makes use of Reuben’s vocal tics and throws in references to Magnum PI (1980–88) and the shrunken alpaca dress from the episode’s other subplot.

It also has a bit of fun with the series’s setting, the dry-cleaning business. This is something of a running joke: it’s not the only episode where Elvis’s unwitting customers have their clothes borrowed for the purposes of unofficial detective work. The sequence gets additional energy from music by ‘90s Brisbane band Custard and Peter Carrodus’s editing which, along with the music, adds rhythm through techniques like jump cuts.
