Clip description

In the ‘Million Dollar Riff’ round, the RocKwiz Orkestra plays well-known musical riffs while contestants compete to name artists and songs.

Curator’s notes

This segment showcases the talents of the RocKwiz Orkestra, featuring: James Black from the Black Sorrows on guitar and Hammond organ; Mark Ferris, a former member of Scared Cowboys and the Models on bass; and Peter ’Lucky’ Luscombe on drums. The band provides almost wall-to-wall music: backing guests, providing clues and having fun with musical clues and stings. The title of each round is inspired by a famous song, in this case a 1975 song by legendary Australian band Skyhooks. The introductory riff here is from AC/DC’s ’Back in Black’ (1980).

The show also allows Australian musicians to introduce themselves personally and to perform live to a receptive television audience. The guests featured here are dancer, actor and ARIA award-winning singer, Christine Anu and singer, songwriter, saxophonist and music producer Joe Camilleri. Of Torres Strait Islander descent, Anu has appeared in Moulin Rouge! (2001) and sang in the Sydney 2000 Olympics closing ceremony. Camilleri (AKA Jo Jo Zep) was a member of bands Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons and The Black Sorrows and was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2007.
