Clip description

The Out There opening titles, accompanied by title track 'Doing What I Do’, introduces the main characters. The offbeat Miller (Richard Wilson), who by his own admission is ‘not what you call popular’, gives a direct-to-camera personal take on newcomers Reilly (Douglas Smith) from the United States and Aggie Thackery (Jade Ewen) from London.

Curator’s notes

The opening titles, a graphics-enriched travelling sequence, features the main characters and a rich variety of Australian icons designed to appeal to an overseas audience. The theme song sets up ongoing themes of individuality and difference (‘I’m not going to do a thing; Just because you did a thing; Maybe, maybe, maybe I don’t want to be like you’).

The opening sequence introduces the audience to the core of the series which explores the lives of teenagers thrown together by circumstance. Miller’s direct-to-camera piece economically establishes both the visiting characters and their diverse points of view. On the ABC’s Out There website, Richard Wilson, who was 18 years old when he played 14-year-old Miller, says of his character, ‘He’s a geek who prefers to be a geek. A bit like me I guess, I’ve been told that I’m a bit out there and a bit weird.’ Australian executive producer Sarah Henderson comments, ‘We were very fortunate with Miller, a quirky, really Australian character, without being your ocker-sport-mate character at all.’
