Curator’s notes
This powerful scene features strong and emotionally brave performances from both lead actors. Tam’s anger at her mother’s sudden and unexpected death presents a realistic, non-simplistic response to the shocking news. Steve’s tears and his cry of 'It’s not only you Tam, I feel something too’, provide a rare glimpse of the expression of raw emotions felt by a teenage boy on screen. The performance by Nicholas Eadie as Uncle Mike is similarly understated and realistic, reflecting the unusually rounded adult characters (with the exception of bad guy Mr Wheeler) in the series.
Tam throws away the red rollerskates that featured in the previous episode. She’d previously got herself into all sorts of exciting scrapes on her rollerskates but now rejects them as she thinks all joy in her life is over.
