Clip description

Ted Egan visits opal town Mintabie and Yvonne, an old friend who lives there.

Curator’s notes

Egan’s friend Yvonne is quite a character. Her entertaining observations on life in Mintabie, combined with the harsh environment we see on screen, paint the picture of a modern-day frontier, populated with chancers trying their luck. This draws a contemporary parallel with the stories of explorers, pioneers and gold prospectors that Egan recounts in other parts of the program.

Mintabie is an interesting inclusion, a point of contrast with the spectacular natural landscapes seen elsewhere in the show. Egan refers to a number of people he meets on his journey as ‘old friends’, making him seem a character who belongs in this environment.
