Clip description
The Bananas in Pyjamas, B1 (Ken Radley) and B2 (Nicholas Opolski), wake up Rat in a Hat (Shane McNamara) to buy some more porridge. Rat, always eager to make a sale, convinces them to make the Teddies Morgan (Jeremy Scrivener), Amy (Mary-Ann Henshaw) and Lulu (Taylor Owynns) breakfast in bed.
Curator’s notes
This clip captures the essence of Bananas in Pyjamas – showcasing the one-dimensional characters and an uncomplicated, amusing slapstick scenario. The Bananas are silly-billies, Rat in a Hat is a crafty entrepreneur, the Teddies are very forgiving – and the breakfast in bed set-up is unsurprising but funny for the target age group. This simplicity and utter predictability makes the program accessible and appealing to young children – almost pantomime-like. Every time the tricky (but not evil) Rat in a Hat comes on screen, the audience needs to shout ‘watch out!’. They also probably need to warn the poor Teddies about the bumbling Bananas as well. The flat, bright comic style, sets and costumes are also a feature of the series.
