Clip description
Shot during the 1960s in the Snowy Mountains, this is footage of quintessentially 1960s-style gardens, including rockeries, flowers and vegetables.
Curator’s notes
The narration talks about the gardening clubs, complete with competitions and exhibitions, set up by the Snowy Mountains Scheme in each township. Clubs like these were particularly important for women, who, at the height of the scheme, were outnumbered by men ten to one. The ratio was much higher in the regions, where life for women could be very lonely and isolated.
