Clip description
Sandy (John Jarratt) asks Scollop (Mel Gibson) why he loves surfing. Scollop says it’s a way of life and what he does to thrash out his problems. Sandy questions what kind of future and security surfing holds.
Curator’s notes
In the 1960s Australia adopted the nickname ‘The Lucky Country’, after the title of Donald Horne’s 1964 book in which he criticised Australia’s lack of enterprise and forward thinking. Scollop has no thought for tomorrow; he lives the ‘lucky country’ life of surfing and good times with his mates. Sandy represents Horne’s call for self-examination. He is thoughtful and wants a secure future.
