Clip description

At a party in the Capulet mansion, Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes) meet for the first time. The couple cannot take their eyes off each other. Juliet is ushered away by her maid (Miriam Margolyes).

Curator’s notes

Not a word is spoken but everything is said when Romeo and Juliet first set eyes upon each other. The scene poetically combines danger and romance. Romeo has snuck into the Capulet house and fallen instantly in love with Juliet, the daughter of his father’s mortal enemy. It is also light-hearted, with Juliet’s maid interrupting the interlude and spiriting Juliet away. Water imagery is used in many scenes in which Romeo and Juliet are alone. The fish tank in this setting serves as visual metaphor for the barriers between the Capulet and Montague families.
