Clip description

Dave (Fred MacDonald) and his new wife Lily (Lilias Adeson) have moved into a newly built shack over the hill from the main house. Mrs White (Dorothy Dunkley) comes to visit as a bull walks into the back of the house. A succession of people rush in, only to rush straight out, but Mrs White determines to show the bull who’s boss.

Curator’s notes

Ken G Hall wrote in his memoir that they had great difficulty getting the bull to charge out through the front of the house (not surprisingly). Hall says Arthur Smith, sound engineer, tied a wet chamois to a stick and wired it to a car battery. Hall then gave the bull 'just a touch on an exposed, very sensitive and personal area’, which fixed the problem. In fact the bull ran straight through the house and was not found again until the next day. Note that Hall uses old silent comedy techniques to spice up this scene – speeding up the film as Dave runs off down the paddock is one example.
