Clip description
After arguing and physically tussling with her husband, Claire (Julia Blake) arrives on Andreas’s (Charles Tingwell) doorstep in an emotional state. She tells him she can’t go on like this, then that she wants to stay with him overnight. He resists, saying that his daughter would get a shock, to which she replies that he doesn’t love her. She tearfully insists that he ‘keep’ her at his house or he will never see her again.
Curator’s notes
The path of love is not smooth. Claire’s contradictory statements reflect her emotional turmoil. Not only does she say she can’t continue the affair while nonetheless wanting to stay with Andreas, she has a peculiar way of asking to stay – demanding he ‘keep me here’, as if asking paradoxically to be held against her will.
