Curator’s notes
In this powerful scene Roger East decides to remain in Dili and report on the imminent Indonesian invasion. In LaPaglia’s expert performance we can see that East knows he is possibly signing his own death warrant. At this moment his transformation into a heroic figure is complete. East’s touching farewell with Juliana – beautifully shot in silhouette to invoke the sense of a puppet shadow play – forms a compelling emotional connection with the adult Juliana, whose memories of East are used to bookend the film.
