Clip description

Channel Seven reporter Greg Shackleton (Damon Gameau) files a story from a village near the fighting.

Curator’s notes

This is a haunting re-creation of the last surviving report filed by Greg Shackleton, Gary Cunningham and Tony Stewart. A virtual replica of the original, it shows what has happened to Shackleton and his team during this assignment. Deeply affected by spending a night in a village whose inhabitants expect to die very soon, Shackleton abandons the neutral tone of traditional news journalism. His thoughts are a damning condemnation of the international community’s inaction on East Timor, particularly the Australian government’s unwillingness to intervene. Shackleton’s original report is one of the most famous pieces of Australian television journalism and is paid great respect here.
