A shadow of the journalist who was once committed to important social and political issues, East has so far dismissed Ramos-Horta’s overtures. But Ramos-Horta is an astute reader of people and situations. He saves the news about the missing Australian journalists for the right moment, knowing it will spark something in East. The scene sets up the dynamic between charismatic and persuasive Ramos-Horta and East, a weary man who finds something to believe in again.
