Clip description
A junior football team is in the dressing-room before a game. Gender Studies lecturer Dr Clifton Evers discusses the physical dynamics of footballers who go through a group experience together. In a stylised sequence, a junior player recounts when he and members of his team had sex with a woman in the course of one night. Former player David Millward talks about the intense peer pressure that players experience from their team mates off the field.
Curator’s notes
While not excusing unacceptable behaviour, Evers’s observations about the sociology of male bodies going through a common visceral experience sheds light on how a group of men can unconsciously replicate that experience during a sexual encounter. The testimony of the unidentified junior player then links this phenomenon with another common experience – peer pressure. David Millward’s interview reinforces this. This clip demonstrates how well-crafted Footy Chicks is in exploring overlapping and intersecting contributors to a range of social behaviours.
