'We're happy little Vegemites'

Clip description

A children’s chorus promotes the health properties of Vegemite, a popular Australian yeast spread, in this radio jingle from the late 1950s.

Curator’s notes

This rousing marching tune is bursting with joy and health. In fact the phrase Happy Little Vegemites has entered the lexicon of Australian speech to mean ‘happy’ or ‘satisfied’. Many Australians may not know the words to their national anthem but can cheerfully sing this jingle, whose simply but catchy lyrics are quickly implanted in the brain (a sure sign of a successful advertising jingle).

Although the singers all sound like children, they are led by Betty Parker, 'the queen of commercials’, whose daughter sings the solo at the end.

We’re happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be,
We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea,
Our mummy says we’re growing stronger every single week,

Because we love our Vegemite,
We all adore our Vegemite,
It puts a rose in every cheek!
