Clip description

Coach (Kate Ferguson) gives Carol (Nicole Kidman) a pep talk, telling her that winning is everything. She wants Carol to be competitive and focused on winning the race. Carol easily wins her race to the satisfaction of her coach and her father (Terence Donovan). Carol discovers the punk new girl Angie (Alyssa Cook) practising a complex dance routine in the gym and is impressed by how good she is.

Curator’s notes

An interesting scene in the change room – Carol (Nicole Kidman) barely speaks but we understand that perhaps she isn’t as focused as her coach as her gaze wanders to graffiti on the wall. She also doesn’t appear to put much effort into winning her race but she is treated with great acclaim for her talents. In contrast, Angie the outsider is doing something quite exceptional in a different field. She is also doing it unprompted and for the love of it.
