Clip description
Lindy (Marillac Johnston) receives a second letter from the man who says he is her father, with more information about her family. Her real name is Mai and there is a photo of Lindy as a baby with her mother. Le (Quang Chinh Dinh) tells her he is coming to Australia to meet her. Lindy’s mother Marj (Belinda Giblin) is very upset and Lindy voices her parent’s greatest fear ‘Could he take me back?’
Curator’s notes
We hear the letter narrated by Lindy’s Vietnamese father Le, and this brings him very clearly into the story as a real person. Along with Le’s gentle voice, the Vietnamese background music in this scene sets a tone for the story. The shot of Lindy’s mother framed within the window in the background, looking anxiously out at her daughter in the foreground, symbolises a barrier between mother and daughter. Le’s letter raises many questions and many fears for Lindy and for her parents.
