Clip description
Susan (Sherie Graham) goes to the movies, shopping and hanging out in the city with Buzz (Mitch Ambrose) and the gang. In the cinema, Buzz makes a pass but Susan seems oblivious, unlike the jealous Francine (Shanti Gudgeon). Susan is shocked when she sees Francine shoplifting. Then Buzz kisses Susan in the photo-booth. The gang hang out in a playground doing a magazine quiz with lots of laughs. Buzz’s attitude towards Susan changes dramatically when she has to go home. He puts his arm around Francine as they walk off, but looks back to make sure Susan notices.
Curator’s notes
This clip captures much of the mainly innocent mischief the group gets up to, but does include stealing. It is very carefully directed and the tone is right. The actions of the kids are not treated in a moralistic heavy-handed way, nor is the stealing condoned. Instead, the shoplifting scene creates a strong sense of unease through Susan’s reaction.
Interestingly, Susan is the only character whose parents are seen or mentioned in this story. The rest of the gang seem to be free of parental care, guidance and restrictions. In comparison, Susan’s parents are constantly in the story in some way. Here, this creates a rift with Buzz when she obeys her parents and goes home.
