Clip description
Host Eddie McGuire introduces ten new contestants ready to play ‘Fastest finger first’ for their chance to compete for prize money. Steven is successful and sits down with Eddie who introduces him to the audience and prepares him for his next question.
Curator’s notes
Millionaire builds tension through flashing lighting, swooping camera movement and dramatic music. It’s no wonder the contestants, selected from around Australia, look more than a little nervous as they’re each caught by the spotlight and introduced.
The winner of fastest finger first, Steve from NSW, is visibly perspiring as Eddie introduces him to the audience. Reminding him of his upcoming wedding on the weekend probably does not help Steve’s nerves, but Eddie makes light of it with a joke about the show financing Steve’s honeymoon and he starts to relax.
Eddie shakes hands with Steve twice in this clip, a technique to establish rapport between host and contestant. It’s also a serious and businesslike gesture, a reminder to Steve and the audience that he is playing for high stakes.
