play
clip 'Through that door!'

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Mrs Foil (Amanda Bishop) suggests that Shane’s picture belongs in the Art Museum. Setting off through a red door in an attempt to find it, a disembodied voice reminds Shane (Shane Dundas) and David (David Collins) that they have forgotten to wash their elephant, which they then do with the help of the audience. Finally going through the door they find themselves stuck to the floor in the 'Sticky Room’.

Curator’s notes

This clip demonstrates the signature slapstick, ridiculous humour and use of effective sound in the series. Interviewed for Nick Jr, David Collins and Shane Dundas, otherwise known as comedy duo the Umbilical Brothers, hoped that kids would take from the show ‘a sense of wonder about every object, every sound, every person they come across. With a little imagination, everything doesn’t have to be as it seems.’ The physical comedy and sound effects are integral: 'without them there would be no show. The thing is kids do sound effects and physical comedy all the time. Have you ever seen a kid eat spaghetti?’ Shane and David also created character voices and sound effects for 106 episodes of pre-school series Maisy (1999–2000).

This clip features the only other regular human character in the show, friendly neighbour Mrs Foil. Also appearing in the series are Puppet, a friendly bunch of furry creatures called the Schmuzzies (see clip three), Shane’s invisible pet Fido the Fly and the Action Fingers (see clip one).
