Clip description
David (David Collins) and Shane (Shane Dundas) demonstrate the use of an imaginary TV remote control with the help of a bunch of bananas. This is followed by the opening titles which end on a red door. The door opens to reveal Shane behind a perspex screen making a picture of his face, thus introducing the theme of the episode – art.
Curator’s notes
This episode opening demonstrates key themes and elements of The Upside Down Show, namely the power of imagination, direct audience interaction and participation, whimsical physical comedy and the introduction of educational concepts through play. In this episode these include scale, vocabulary, and an ongoing art theme. The opening titles, which won a Daytime Grammy Award (2007), feature the character Action Fingers and end on a red door. This door is one of many opened during the episode in which the brothers embrace a series of new challenges with a mix of wonder, enthusiasm and confusion.
Demonstrating the use of the remote control, David accidentally hits the ‘wiggle button’ which results in Shane uncontrollably running around displaying the signature finger movement of Australian children’s phenomenon The Wiggles. Commenting to The New York Times in 2007 on the inclusion of inside jokes for adults in the frequently improvised dialogue, Shane Dundas commented, ‘Kids watch these things over and over and over again. I wanted to add something that would at least keep it interesting for their parents.’
