Kate (Justine Clarke) celebrates her birthday with loving family and friends at a harbour side restaurant. Her father gives her a yacht, Princess Kate as a gift. Kate, her father, her little brother Rob (Shane Tickner) and her friends (Mouche Phillips, Claudia Karvan, Beth Buchanan) go sailing in the new yacht on Sydney Harbour, and they encounter a group of boys in a small boat.
Curator’s notes
This scene highlights how much Kate’s parents love her. It also shows Kate’s privileged life, contrasting Kate and her snobbish friends in the yacht, and the irreverent, but good-humoured boys in the run-about boat. The girls describe them disparagingly as ‘westies’. This scene foreshadows Kate’s discovery that she may be a ‘westie’ herself when she finds out she is adopted.
