'Why are you here in my house?'

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

While surreptitiously searching the old playhouse where the Stranger, Adam Suisse (Ron Haddrick), now lives, teenagers Bernie (Bill Levis), Jean (Janice Dinnen) and Peter (Michael Thomas) come across a strange electronic device hidden under the floorboards. They are bewildered to hear communication in an unrecognisible language, and are confronted by a furious Adam Suisse who demands to know, ‘Why are you here in my house?’

Curator’s notes

The tension of potential discovery is highlighted in this sequence as Jean worries that Adam Suisse will return. Scenes of the teenagers secretly searching are intercut with shots of a serious-looking Adam returning to the house. This increases the suspense as we share the teenagers’ fear of discovery. This sequence also shows the dramatic device of a cliffhanger ending, drawing the audience back for the next week’s installment.

The production values, especially the crude prop used for an ‘electronic gadget’, very much reflect the time at which the series was produced. Nevertheless, the performances are convincing, in particular the ominous presence provided by Ron Haddrick, a distinguished actor with a long list of credits on stage, screen and radio.
