Clip description

The lovers (Rosalind Keene and Edward Brayshaw) have been uncovered before the whole community of pearl fishers and the high priest (Frank Lisle) has passed a sentence of death by fire. The pearl fisher chief (Ronal Jackson) intercedes for his friend but when he discovers that, despite an earlier vow, the couple have betrayed him with their secret love, his vengeance is terrible and he insists they must die immediately.

Curator’s notes

With the chorus and soloists on stage, and a troupe of dancers, the setting is sumptuous, in the style of Hollywood’s early depictions of exotic settings from ancient times.

This huge venture was mounted from the television studios at Gore Hill by the producer William Stirling and a stellar cast of members of the Australian Opera.
