The building business

Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

Builder Terry Vince has observed through his work on building sites that scaffolding needs a gadget to assist the sole operator to lay the planks. He’s come up with a simple, inexpensive and easy-to-use invention to plug a gap for home builders. The panel immediately respond because it’s useful, easily marketed and a simple design.

Curator’s notes

Terry Vince is a likeable chap who has come up with this remarkable invention in his spare time. He’s chosen as this week’s winner, making him eligible for the grand prize of inventor of the year.

The clip is a good example of the simple but engrossing approach of the show. How the invention works is so clearly told anyone can follow it, and the payoff where the builder jumps up and down is very effective. The set is plain, with nothing to distract from the content.

The show’s format has stood the test of time. The New Inventors has copied its basic structure of 3 or 4 inventions and a panel of three judges from the marketplace, the world of design and the end users, with an opinionated and encouraging presenter playing to the studio audience. Both series introduce designers from all over Australia and from every walk of life.
