A serious yachtsman has invented a clever improvement to the winch used in yachting that he explains to the panel. They approve this as a very clever addition to the gadgetry of a racing boat.
Curator’s notes
This is a very interesting example of the sexism that existed in Australian society only a few decades ago. The panel expects Diana Fisher to play the role of the dizzy female and she obliges. Of course she mentions that she’d prefer the invention to be a different colour and she’s naturally unable to use any of the technical jargon that the blokes slip into as a matter of course. In comparison, The New Inventors has women panellists as experts in their field and everyone is treated with the respect owed to their expertise, which still allows for lots of quips and jokes along the way.
Dick Smith is a stand-in for this program while the usual marketing expert is otherwise engaged. Dick is straightforward in his questions, offers good marketing advice and understands the range and purpose of the inventions under discussion.
