Clip description

Lawyer Drew Ellis (Aaron Pedersen) arrives for a morning of cases on circuit in the Kimberley. Sam (Kelton Pell) introduces him to one of the day’s clients, Debbie (Jedda Rae Hill), a young mother facing drug-related charges. In court, Drew represents Tommy, a young repeat offender, before Magistrate Peter Lockhart (Gary Sweet). The magistrate has a novel suggestion for keeping Tommy out of further trouble.

Curator’s notes

The opening shot pulls back to emphasise the remoteness of this Aboriginal community. While effective, it’s too overt. Similarly the use of jump-zooms in the scene with Debbie Pope is intended to convey an almost documentary feel but appears clumsy. The court scene is handled well with a series of slow pans and the more lighthearted interplay between the young Aboriginal boy Tommy and the Judge.
