Clip description
When the council inspector (Stephen Leeder) returns unexpectedly to the camp, he fines Rose (Vanessa Steele) after he finds rubbish strewn in the bushes. Local bullies Sam (Miles Szanto) and Ryan (Alex Hughes) are delighted with the result of their devious handiwork. Marian (Ross Pirrelli), Pia (Ella Roberts), Spike (Matthew Waters) and Snobs take more rubbish to the tip where the tip keeper (Bruce Venables) tries to trick them. Marian has an idea that solves the problem. Meanwhile, Sam and Ryan steal the mower.
Curator’s notes
The attitude of some of the locals who go out of their way to make life difficult for the camp people underpins many of the stories in this series. Here, the tip man deliberately puts obstacles in the way of the kids but of course in this fantasy world, bullies such as him always come off the worst in the end, which is very satisfying for young viewers. Our wholesome heroes make the most of these situations and get what they want, cheekily but not rudely, despite how they have been treated.
As seen in this clip, while the camp kids and adults mostly conduct themselves with honour and dignity, in contrast many of the town kids and adults – such as the tip man and Abby’s mother – are rude, manipulative and unkind. This creates lots of potential for dramatic showdowns between our heroes and the villains, with lots of well-deserved retribution for bullies of all ages.
