Boon Boon (Rebecca Gibney) returns the young foals to the herd, and Thowra (John Higginson) is watching. When the spy Currawong (Michael Carmen) reports this, The Brolga (John Stanton) puts on an aggressive display. Thowra remembers his father, the great Yarraman, and promises himself that one day he will reclaim his father’s kingdom.
Curator’s notes
This clip brings the old rivalries into the story, and sets up the looming leadership struggle between two males, the powerful older stallion and the brash youth who is watching and learning, patiently waiting his time to challenge. The animation skilfully captures the territorial hostility shown by The Brolga – in the animal world, physical strength and aggression are necessary requirements for the leader of the pack.
