Clip description
Arriving at work for the day, Laura Gibson (Sigrid Thornton) tries to take Diver Dan’s advice and really mean it when she asks her clerk, Angus (Tom Long), ‘How are you?’, much to his bemusement. When court is in session, Simmo (Francis Greenslade) is brought in under suspicion of driving the car off the bridge. Angus and Constable Karen Miller (Kate Atkinson) take Laura aside to explain why Simmo couldn’t have done it.
Curator’s notes
Angus’s none-too-subtle ‘interventions’ in court process are a running joke in the series. He frequently fills Laura in on details that everybody in the community but she is aware of, highlighting her outsider status. SeaChange often sets up tensions between the unspoken rules of the Pearl Bay community and official law, with Laura forced to negotiate a balance between them. The message sometimes seems to be that Laura is learning to be a little more human when she doesn’t do things ‘by the book’. This episode ultimately swings the other way, showing when an outsider’s perspective and detached judgement is valuable.
