Zelda (Nadine Garner) applies for work at 'Radio Visually Impaired’. Her request to work as an announcer, even in a voluntary capacity, is rejected. Later, Robert (Matthew Dyktynski) and Zelda share their mutual admiration for the novel Catch 22. A graphic passport ID introduces the audience to Sarah Maria Tomic (Elena Mandalis) and her tagline: ‘lots of potential’.
Curator’s notes
Introducing one of the main protagonists and continuing to establish the theme of young people bumping up against unreasonable authority, the visually impaired Zelda looks for a job in radio. She is not impressed at being turned away from ‘a radio station for blind people’, after arguing reasonably that 'I only want to announce – I’ve got a voice’. The self-defeating logic behind her rejection is reflected in Zelda and Robert’s familiarity with the classic critique of bureaucracy, Catch 22.
The economic device of introducing and giving a summary and tag to each central character via a graphic with sound effects is continued here with the introduction of Sarah.
