Clip description
B Max arrives home with a surprise. It’s a rabbit, but the friends soon realise that they don’t know how to look after it. They go to a song while they think about it.
Curator’s notes
Like all good preschooler programs, Raggs has a very predictable structure with the same segments appearing at the same time in each episode. For example, here, when the word ‘flea’ is mentioned it is the signal for the ‘everybody scratch’ action. This regular segment occurs early in each episode.
In this clip the bright, flat, cartoonish colours, the costumes with the rather fascinating reflecting eyes and moveable eyelids and lashes, and the beautifully designed set all create an extremely appealing look.
It is also an example of how the drama segments segue into the music and movement segments. This one has a fairly loose connection with the topic of pets and the responsibilities of looking after them, but that shouldn’t worry a preschooler. In this concert scene, the dogs’ rock-n-roll band performs a simple, repetitive song, ‘R A G G S’, in the tradition of many well-known Australian children’s bands such as those in The Wiggles and of course Hi 5. In this segment, the characters on stage seem enormous compared to the size of the children in the audience.
