Clip description
Connie (Lynette Curran) learns from a television report that her son Peter (Clayton Williamson) has chained himself to the Gamma Cenotaph in the town centre. He’s on a hunger strike in protest against the Roman boat leaving Gamma for a tour of America. Besieged by the media, Connie flees her caravan and goes into the town where she pleads with Peter to give up his protest and come home.
Curator’s notes
This scene highlights the contrast between what Peter wants and what his mother wants. Connie desperately pleads 'Don’t blow our one big chance’. She plays on Peter’s emotional vulnerability by telling him that their good fortune will bring his dad back. It is an intense and painful moment for Peter.
The television report at the scene’s opening refers to the then recently released Crocodile Dundee.
