Original classification rating: G. This clip chosen to be G

Clip description

When gold was discovered in New South Wales, men and women dropped whatever they were doing and rushed to make their fortunes on the goldfields. Saloons and music halls sprouted to provide entertainment and to take their hard-earned gold from them. The rest of the world wanted nothing more than to come to this Eldorado, that had until then been known as a convict colony.

Curator’s notes

Bill Peach brings alive the gold fever of those times with music and songs from the era as well as paintings and lithographs. The program offers recreations of the atmosphere of the times. With well-placed pieces to camera, Bill Peach reminds us that this is our story and that the discovery of gold changed the history of Australia forever.
