Clip description
Inventor brothers explain a pool cleaner they’ve invented that picks up leaves and other debris from the surface of the pool before it settles onto the bottom to finish the job.
Curator’s notes
This clip shows how relatively low-budget television can keep the pace fast through simple but effective techniques in editing and sound. Allowing the inventors to explain their work personalises them, as well as quickly showing us what their invention does. However the clip also reveals how the show cleverly gets around the hard ask of having TV non-professionals talk to camera in an engaging way, by letting them explain their invention in voice-over while we see it in action.
Host James O’Loghlin came from stand-up comedy and was well known to ABC radio listeners of the time in NSW and Canberra, from his broadcasts in the early evenings on the metropolitan station 702. He’s been chosen because he is very appealing, and can be relied upon to keep the quips coming.
