Clip description
In the opening segment of The Naked Vicar Show, stars Ross Higgins, Kevin Golsby and Noeline Brown talk about political figures of the day.
Curator’s notes
This opening panel segment was a standard feature of The Naked Vicar Show and echoes the segment that opened The Mavis Bramston Show (1964–68), in which Noeline Brown also appeared. It is also a carry-over from the show’s earlier incarnation as a radio series, which usually began with a fake news segment. The radio show was recorded before a studio audience. Brown notes in her autobiography, Noeline: Longterm Memoir (2005), that performing radio for a live audience was rare at the time and producers made the audience and their laughter 'very much a part of the show’. In the TV incarnation we also see the deliberate integration of the studio audience for a live feel.
These opening and closing segments often make fun of the parochial qualities of Australian political parties and politicians – here Queensland and its politicians are the butt of the joke. This example shows a light-hearted mockery of politicians that revels in verbal play, rather than being deeply satirical or critical.
