Clip description

When a passerby (Colin McEwan) enters a jeans store, he gets more than he bargained for with shop assistant Berys (Laurel McGowan) who prefers him to use her ‘boutique name’, Candy.

Curator’s notes

This jeans shop sketch extends The Naked Vicar Show’s view of urban Australia beyond television and the suburban home and into a generic consumer setting. Through ‘Candy’, it takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the alternative pop-cultural universe obsessively inhabited by teenagers, pushing its absurdity to comic extremes.

Before The Naked Vicar Show’s journey from radio to stage to TV, the writing-producing team of Tony Sattler and Gary Reilly wrote sketch comedy for then fledgling ABC youth station 2JJ (now Triple J) and worked with Grahame Bond on the short-lived ABC TV bushranger sitcom Flash Nick from Jindavick (1974).
