Four stars for Little Fish

Original classification rating: PG. This clip chosen to be PG

Clip description

Margaret concludes her review of Little Fish by turning to David for his response. He too loved the film and both are full of praise for the outstanding performance of Hugo Weaving as Lionel, the sleazy, heroin addicted de facto member of the family who betrayed their trust when he introduced Tracy to drugs.

Curator’s notes

After her review of the film, interspersed with footage from the film, Margaret turns to David for his comments. In this case he is in complete agreement and both of them give the film four stars. Sometimes the two disagree vehemently, which reminds us that we’re all capable of seeing a film with subjective eyes. It’s the nature of the medium. Margaret and David’s disagreements have become legend and we all enjoy their spats, just like people who’ve been to see the same movie and have a fight about it over dinner after the show.

The format of this evergreen film review program has changed little. Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton had their television debut at SBS where they pioneered The Movie Show in 1987. In mid 2004 they moved across to the ABC and continued with At The Movies where Margaret and David have proved eternally durable. It’s a serendipitous mix of two very different perrsonalities. Margaret comes across as bubbly and emotionally engaged while David seems more feet on the ground and provides a terrific foil for Margaret’s personality. Both of them are deeply knowledgeable about cinema and like nothing better than to review a fine new film, especially if it’s Australian, with director and actor interviews to celebrate the event.
