Clip description
The family have returned to Maggie’s house for the wake after her brother’s funeral. Uncle Tom (Peter Gwynne) has a heart attack and dies on their sofa in the lounge room just as he’s about to drink a cup of tea.
Curator’s notes
It’s an old gag but a fresh one in the hands of writer Geoffrey Atherden. Uncle Tom has died at the wake of brother Andrew. It’s side-splittingly funny and everyone behaves according to character, especially Maggie, who is having trouble explaining yet another death in the family.
This wonderful program fits squarely in the situation comedy genre, or 'sitcom’, that began in radio but is most often found on television these days. The sitcom consists of recurring characters in a common environment, usually the home or the workplace. Each episode is self-contained and the regular characters remain relatively static while the events of each episode are usually resolved by the end of the program.
