Clip description

John Macumba and other interviewees talk about the establishment and early days of the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA).

Curator’s notes

This clip makes clever use of historic still images to support the narration of an unseen Aboriginal man describing the founding of CAAMA. Having met Macumba as an older man, we can now get a sense of him from these photos as an energetic young man setting up Aboriginal broadcasting.

The interview footage of Macumba in the early 1980s is shot in close-up to reinforce the importance of his message about maintaining Aboriginal culture (and to be heard above what sounds like heavy engine or industrial noise in the background). It makes an interesting contrast to the contemporary interview with a more relaxed Macumba, who is captured in mid-shot in natural surroundings against a picturesque sunset backdrop. The framing effectively suggests a man who is justifiably proud of his achievements and happy to look back over his life.
