Clip description

Bill ‘Happy’ Henderson (Shane Bourne) takes Layla Young (Petra Jared) to discuss a case with lawyer Hugo Urban (Vincent Miller). Meanwhile, Professor Robyn Masterson (Sigrid Thornton) is delivering bad news to her sick patient Belinda (Chloe Armstrong). Tests show her mother Jenny McRoberts (Natasha Herbert) cannot donate Belinda her kidney. When Ross McRoberts (Bruce Hughes) volunteers instead, Jenny tries to dissuade him. She has something to hide, leaving Professor Masterson in a difficult position.

Curator’s notes

Happy gets his nickname from generally seeming the opposite. While Second Chance is in part about Happy acting against type, his meeting with a rival lawyer functions to remind the viewer of some of his core characteristics. Some funny dialogue communicates his dry, cutting wit and strong knowledge of his job. Taking the action outside allows for some of the visual variety and movement producers aimed for in season three.

While Happy appears to be getting back on track, the following scene foreshadows events that will again divide his focus. The gravely ill Belinda is the ticking clock of Second Chance’s plot and by this point in the story Happy is heavily invested in her fate. Here, just as she seems to have the go-ahead for her transplant, a further obstacle is thrown in her path. As with the various other obstacles she has faced, this also comes from another character’s deception and mistakes.
