Curator’s notes
The word ‘sketch’ is seldom separated from the word ‘comedy’ on contemporary television. This serious sketch feels unusual to watch now, particularly in the context of a comedy-variety show and introduced as it is by one of the show’s standard title layouts, featuring the ridiculous Mavis Bramston. Nonetheless, like much of the show’s satirical comedy, it makes a point about a current issue through a performance in character. Conscription for the Vietnam War was introduced in Australian in 1964.
