Clip description
Judy Davis attended a convent school in Western Australia during the late 1960s when the Catholic Church was in turmoil. When she left school in the early 1970s, there were no Australian female actor role models for her to emulate. And even these days she says it’s particularly difficult for women in our society to break into the film industry if they’re over 40.
Curator’s notes
It was a good decision to keep the camera on Judy Davis for almost this entire clip. Her story is compelling, she is fascinating to watch and she has been given the space and time in which to articulate her thoughts without interruption.
Similarly the set design is well considered. Muted tones of black and grey do not distract the viewer from Davis who rightfully is the centre of attention. And although she becomes quite animated at times the camera manages to follow her movements.
