Clip description

Kev (Ray Meagher) catches up with Tommo (Paul Sonkkila) at the pub, where he gradually becomes aware that Tommo is hiding something. His worst fears are realised when he returns to the caravan to discover Ampy (Charito Ortez) has been raped and beaten.

Curator’s notes

Writer, director and actors combine in these two scenes to give us some powerful viewing. The scene in the pub is a treasure of subtext, masterfully controlled by Sonkkila and Meagher. There is a close-up of their silent faces, just before Kev walks out, that beautifully highlights what they are not saying to each other.

The shared pain of Kev and Ampy portrayed in the second scene is very moving. Meagher gives a superb performance, as rage and anger give way first to incomprehension, then compassion and remorse as he hugs his wife.
