Julia (Asher Keddie) and Charlie (Dan Wyllie) have Frankie (Claudia Karvan) and Tom (Brendan Cowell) over to dinner – their first dinner party since the birth of their son. It’s not quite the occasion Julia and Charlie had hoped for. Host and guests bicker and, when the baby starts crying, Lou (Alex Cook) wants to help, to Julia’s annoyance.

Here the episode enters its main thematic terrain – the drama, complexity and ambiguities that arise between characters in an extended 'blended’ family. Up to this point in the series, we’ve largely seen this group getting along in an impressive fashion – now we see tensions emerging.
The silent drama that plays out between the guests at the dinner table as they listen to Julia and Lou is beautifully staged.
