At a conference in Jakarta, Malcolm Fraser speaks out against going to war in Iraq.
Curator’s notes
At this conference of former heads of government held in Jakarta prior to the war in Iraq, Malcolm Fraser delivers a strong statement against any military action unless it is sanctioned by the United Nations. Considering the traditionally strong ties between Australia and the US – and the particularly close friendship of US president George W Bush and Australian prime minister John Howard – Fraser’s comments about US foreign policy were highly controversial. Outspoken views such as those expressed here have led many Australians to reconsider their opinion of Malcolm Fraser.
