The saintly Dr Raymond Good (Brian Nankervis) and the dastardly Dr Richard Lovechild (David Swann) vie for the attentions of newcomer Nurse Pam Sandwich (Jean Kittson).
Curator’s notes
There is no room for middle ground, subtlety or subtext in Let the Blood Run Free, as this scene pitting the extremely virtuous Ray against the supremely self-interested Lovechild demonstrates. The series thrives on stereotypes and extremes of character, its cast a collection of soap opera, pantomime and pulp fiction stereotypes.
This melodramatic moment sends up soap opera in particular. The dialogue parodies soap’s tendencies towards overstatement and the voice-over cliffhanger ending references an older generation of TV serials.
Set designer Geoff Hatton has fun with tacky, stage-style sets that suit Let the Blood Run Free’s cheesy faux-melodrama.
