Clip description

A few years into the life of the colony at Botany Bay, Mary Bryant (Romola Garai) and Will Bryant (Alex O’Loughlin) run a venture where they supply the colony with fish in return for a share of the catch. With crops failing and fish numbers dwindling, Lieutenant Clarke (Jack Davenport) arrives to inform Mary and Will that they may no longer keep their share. Governor Phillip (Sam Neill) writes home to England to explain the colony’s desperate situation.

Curator’s notes

Mary Bryant paints a squalid, corrupt picture of life in the early colonies. This sequence provides a turning point in the plot, as Mary’s situation becomes desperate enough for her to consider escape.
