Clip description

The Homicide team question friends of Buddy Rand (Fred Cullen) in an attempt to discover what he knows about the robbery. Inspector Lawson (Charles Tingwell) and Detective Sergeant Barnes (George Mallaby) question Buddy’s employer. Senior Detective Kelly (John Stanton) and Senior Detective Redford (Gary Day) approach Buddy’s girlfriend Betty Breen (Bunny Gibson).

Curator’s notes

Screenwriter Fred ‘Cul’ Cullen uses a standard feature of a Homicide storyline – police procedural scenes – to reveal information about Buddy’s character and worldview, in particular his faith in mateship and loyalty. As the police close in, Buddy’s mission to rescue Tommy Patterson is also forced forwards when he hears his girlfriend unwittingly tip off the police.

Cullen invites the audience to see police procedure from two perspectives. The detectives don’t appear too ruffled; it seems they know it’s only a matter of time before they get their man (or men). Buddy is a different story – these scenes invite some sympathy for him as he gets himself further and further into trouble.
